It is no secret that the phrase “selfie” has become commonplace in a variety of communities across the world. The term “selfie” itself has actually grown more than 17 000% in popularity since 2012. Celebrity culture has embraced the selfie and even the first lady Michelle Obama has participated in the selfie phenomenon.

Instagram is flooded with over 35 million selfies annually. Selfies are also beginning to dominate the type of photos shared on Facebook and in text messages. In fact, Australians are some of the world’s biggest selfie fans, followed closely by the United States of America and Canada according to a survey taken in 2013.

The word “selfie” was officially added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2013

In order for a word to become part of the dictionary, a group of editors will gather a significant amount of independent evidence from a wide range of services. This enables the editors to become completely confident that the word being added has a widespread currency within the English language. The phrase “selfie” has recently generated enough interest to become part of the oxford dictionary.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, as of 2013, the word “selfie” is a noun meaning:

A self-shot photo, usually taken with a mobile phone and posted online to social media sites.

According to Samsung, 30 % of pictures taken by people who are 18-24 are selfies

And, according to Samsung, this figure is only increasing! It is seemingly obvious that people who are in their late teens and twenties are the ones taking the most selfies.

What this has to do with your smile and Invisalign

One of the most popular selfie looks is a beautiful smile and if you are unhappy with the appearance of your smile, you are not alone. For those who are in their twenties and above, the idea of braces or obvious orthodontics can be quite disheartening.

Introducing Invisalign…

At Verve Orthodontics in Sydney we are accredited Invisalign providers at both our Sydney CBD and Mosman practice locations. The Invisalign system is made of a series of clear plastic aligners that blend seamlessly into your smile to appear virtually invisible.

The clear aligners are removable which means patients are able to maintain an excellent oral hygiene routine as they can remove the aligner trays to brush their teeth as they did before. As the aligners are removable you can also take them out to enjoy formal events, take pictures or to feel confident when public speaking.

With its many benefits Invisalign could be the perfect step for you to be able to take your best smiling selfie yet.
